The Rituals of Adolescence
The American rituals of adolescence, like getting your drivers license, the Senior Prom, Voting and High school graduation are not prevalent in other cultures and some do not even have an “adolescent” period at all. In your group, research the passage rites of a particular culture that you have chosen and create a PowerPoint presentation to be given to the class in two days time. I will also need a short summary of what you found, one to two pages. This is worth 60 points.

Here are some guiding questions to help in your research and you must include at least 5 in addition to a brief explanation of your society, like where it is, how it works.: --How does your society view “adolescence”? --At what age does this ritual take place? --Who traditionally participates besides the child? --What is the structure of the ritual? --What are the main components of the ritual? --What makes this ritual similar or different from others?
**If your society does not have any adolescent stage at all, you must tell me about that culture, incorporating aspects of it that make that society have no need or want for an adolescent stage. |

Here are some websites to get you started. Although they are American, they may serve as a comparison or a springboard to other sites. You can also use traditional research sources, such as articles, journals, newspapers, encyclopedias or books - you know, the stuff that's in the library.

These are only a sample of what is out there. Please remember to use common sense in deciding if an internet source is reliable or not. You may use more traditional research methods found in the library such as books and journal articles.
